Michael Gove, the education secretary, warned against union "militancy" ahead of a walkout on Thursday by up to 750,000 teachers and public sector workers.
By going on strike teachers would cause "massive inconvenience for working parents" and damage further the reputation of their profession, he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.
