A neighbour strangled Joanna Yeates then went shopping in Asda with her body in his car boot, a court has heard.
Vincent Tabak, 33, texted his girlfriend to say he was bored just minutes after murdering the 25-year-old, a jury was told.
CCTV footage showed Tabak then wandering the aisles of the supermarket, before dumping her body, it has been reported.
Tabak, who admits manslaughter but denies murder, did not even know his victim's name, prosecutor Nigel Lickley said.
Shortly after the killing, Tabak sent his girlfriend a text message: "Miss you loads. It's boring here without you Vxx".
He then went to the 24-hour supermarket to buy rock salt, for melting ice, along with crisps and beer.
Yeates' mother Teresa wept in the public gallery at Bristol Crown Court as the jury was shown CCTV footage of the victim enjoying drinks with friends before she was killed.
Neighbours at a Christmas party near her flat in Clifton, Bristol, told police they heard at least two screams as the killing took place on December 17 last year.
Despite being his next-door neighbour Yeates and Tabak did not know each other.
Tabak's girlfriend Miss Morson contacted police to provide information about their landlord Christopher Jefferies - who was arrested and cleared - while she spent New Year with Tabak in Holland, the court heard.
But when detectives flew out to the Netherlands to take a statement from the couple, Tabak appeared to offer an inconsistent version of events, the court heard.
Mr Lickley said: "They asked Tabak to provide a DNA mouth-swab and fingerprint... He would have to be eliminated from inquiries."
The court also heard how Tabak had watched a timelapse video of a body decomposing as he conducted internet research in the wake of Miss Yeates' disappearance.
The trial continues.
