Thousands of people are talking about Marmite on Twitter right now, after one of Britain's busiest motorways was blocked when 20-tonnes of sticky yeast extract was spilled by a truck.

Police shut the M1 between junction 32 and 33 at Sheffield at around 10.15pm Monday night after a tanker carrying yeast extract - believed to be Marmite - overturned, the BBC reported.

The substance was spilled onto both carriageways and a large-scale clean-up operation took place.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the tanker overturned after being involved in a collision with a motor caravan, the BBC reported.

Twitter users have quickly picked up on the story and the endless love-hate marmite debate has been much commented on.

It has become one of the most talked about topics on Twitter, which allow users to make short statements or comments up to 144-words-long.

Some tweets can be seen below:

Andrew C: "Marmite crash shuts M1. I love this story, I guess some will hate it though."

Erica Packington: "So, a tanker of Marmite crashes after a collision with a caravan. I think that is probably the most English accident that ever was, non?"

BBC Radio 4: "Best Marmite pun from our emails: "Was the Marmite crash on the yeast bound carriageway?"

Chloe-Louise Webster: "You couldn't pay me enough to eat #marmite. Vomit in a jar."
