Webber's summer gear shift - International News Network

LONDON: Mark Webber is looking forward to some surfing and relaxation following tomorrows season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix.

Sources said that the 35-year-old Red Bull driver, who has struggled to match his teammate, dual world champion Sebastian Vettel, this season, said also that he hopes to carry some of his improved momentum through the off-season and into 2012.

I have been better in the last few races than earlier in the season so I am hoping to carry that with me into next year as well.

Webber also admitted that the age gap between him and the 24-year-old German was a significant factor in his struggle to compete. I weigh 10 kilos more than Sebastian, he said.

But I have had that for my whole career, so we have to work with what we have.

He added: Although it might not have showed, my performances have been better than at the start of the season. At my last grand prix [Abu Dhabi], the race on Sunday was competitive even though I was down 20 or 30 pounds of downforce.

On Sundays, I have been competitive. So, if the tyres stay pretty similar, which I believe they will then I should be okay next year. As the formula one season comes to an end, drivers are raving about the rule changes that were aimed at encouraging passing and improving racing. A study by Mercedes showed there have been more than 800 overtaking manoeuvres in the first 18 races, reaching record levels in F1.

Nearly half of those passes came thanks to the new drag reduction system implemented by FIA this year, which allows drivers to adjust their rear wings to increase speed and facilitate passing.

It is very obvious that we have improved big time, Mercedes driver and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher said on Thursday. It has contributed for some great racing.

Organisers of the proposed 2012 grand prix in Texas say they have agreed to pay the sanctioning fee to secure a spot on next years calendar. They are waiting on a contract from F1.
