Wherever You Are became Britain's 60th Christmas number one, unseating Little Mix, the winners of The X Factor. It is only the second time in seven years that a Simon Cowell-sponsored act has failed to take the festive title.
The Military Wives Choir provided Decca Records with its first number one since 1966, when Tom Jones topped the chart with Green, Green Grass of Home. Executives at the label are now planning to bring out an album, most likely timed for next year's Christmas market.
Sam Stephenson, the shy singer who became the star of the television series and sang lead vocals, chose to spend the day celebrating with family. She said: "We would love to do an album that would be fantastic."
A source said: "The single has been such an amazing success that an album is an obvious next step. The main difficulty will be getting all the women together to record it because their husbands' jobs mean they move around a lot."
It is unlikely that Malone will mastermind the album because he is now turning his attention to the United States. The 36 year-old will film a pilot episode of The Choir there next month.
As the Military Wives cracked open the champagne yesterday, one of their number had another reason to celebrate.
Chantelle Stokes, 25, gave birth in the car park of Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, on Dec 13. She was driven there by her husband, Adam, a Royal Marine, after going into labour but baby Chloe arrived so quickly that she was delivered in the front seat of the family's Ford Galaxy.
"The front seat of my car was laid back and she came out there," Mrs Stokes said. "When I get in the car it's bizarre to think my daughter was born in it. She is a Christmas miracle."
