Early Reports Show Strength in Holiday Shopping - Forbes

Today is Cyber Monday, the day when holiday shoppers who flooded the malls and big box stores on Black Friday and over the weekend take to the internet in search of deals.

Retailers are offering all kinds of online-only specials today.

Meanwhile, early reports of shopping activity from Black Friday showed a strong early start to the shopping season.

Research firm ShopperTrak said sales rose 6.6% from last year on Friday, as foot traffic in stores rose 5.1%.
In all, sales reached a record $11.4 billion, ShopperTrak said.

IBM (IBM) said online sales on Friday rose 24%.

Amazon.com (AMZN) offered some support for that figure, as it said Black Friday was the best ever day for sales of its Kindle family of products.

The Kindle Fire was the best selling product on Amazon's website, the company noted.

Sales of the Kindle Fire were strong at Target (TGT) and Best Buy (BBY) on Friday as well, Amazon's report noted.
