Which was exactly what Mrs May was doing, barked Yvette Cooper, the Shadow Home Secretary. She reminded the House that, at the height of this row in November, Mrs May had claimed her pilot scheme had been a success, saying it had led to the detection of 10 per cent more illegal immigrants. It certainly sounded impressive, this idea that the fewer checks you did, the more criminals you caught. Maybe if we never did any checks at all, we could round up al-Qaeda in a week.
