Facebook launches new ice-breaker profile pages - Financial Post

  December 6, 2010 – 1:01 pm

The Facebook profile makeover, launched last night on CBS's 60 Minutes , focuses on "conversation starters" for users, with reorganized personal information aimed at letting users' interests and hobbies shine.

Personal information – such as relationship status, location and birth date – is highlighted at the top of the new profile under the user's name, followed by a row of the five photos in which the user has recently been tagged. Photos can be hidden by the user for privacy.

On the left-hand side, users can now list the most important people in their lives, including family members and partners.

Another new feature compiles and displays the relationship history and common interests of any Facebook friend of the user.

The profile redesign also includes more graphics under categories representing what's important to the user.

In order to make space for the new functions, likes, links and latest photos have been kicked off the left-hand side.

For those who may not be interested in the switch right away, Facebook has introduced the new profile in an "opt-in rollout." Users can activate the new profile themselves, by clicking on the new profile about page. But, once a user has accepted the new profile, there is no going back to the old style.

Facebook is expected to roll out the new profile to all 500 million users by early 2011.

The redesign has already raised some privacy concerns, as it asks users to share more personal information and displays it prominently at the top of the page.
