Before the Mac there was the Blue Box. As told by Woz in his autobiography iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, he and Steve Jobs built devices that bypass telephone-switching mechanisms and make free long-distance calls.

One night, just playing around, Wozniak used the blue box to call the Pope. Impersonating Henry Kissinger, Woz writes he asked for the Pope, who was still sleeping. The Vatican, though, sniffed a ruse.
