LulzSec hacker group disbands - Telegraph.co.uk

The group was believed to have been a splinter from "Anonymous," a coalition of computer hackers that targeted oppressive Middle Eastern governments and opponents of WikiLeaks, the whistle-blowing website.

Kevin Mitnick, a security consultant and former hacker, said the LulzSec group had inspired copycats around the world so similar attacks were likely to continue.

He said: "They can sit back and watch the mayhem and not risk being captured." The group was unusual among hackers in that it actively sought publicity.

Its statement said it had caused disruption "just because we could." In an interview last week a member of the group said it was sitting on a large stash of government and police data from across the world, which it planned to release in the next three weeks.

Last week, as part of a Scotland Yard and FBI probe into LulzSec, Essex teenager Ryan Cleary, 19 was arrested.

Cleary, who has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, is charged with conspiring to carry out distributed denial of service attacks, in which websites are flooded with traffic to make them crash.

He is accused of attacking websites of the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency, the British Phonographic Industry, and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
