A man has been released on bail after a dog was dragged behind the back of a Porsche for more than six miles.
Sussex Police said a 33-year-old who handed himself into a police station in Worthing had been questioned on suspicion of animal cruelty.
The car was seen dragging the dog at the Devil's Dyke car park near Brighton at about 22:00 GMT on Sunday, and then 30 minutes later on the A27.
PC Scott Walters said the beagle-collie cross suffered "horrific injuries".
The body of the dog was found in a lay-by near the Southwick Tunnel.
A forensic examination of the dog is likely to be carried out by the end of the week to confirm the cause of its death.
The man has been released on bail until 14 December.
