'Vertigo' displaces 'Citizen Kane' as world's greatest film - Detroit Free Press

Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock? "Citizen Kane" or "Vertigo"?

While film buffs can argue that these two are both meticulously crafted classics, Welles' 1941 masterpiece "Citizen Kane" has just lost its 50-year title of "greatest film of all time" to "Vertigo," Hitchcock's 1958 psychological thriller.

"Kane" has occupied the top slot in the British Film Institute magazine Sight & Sound's once-a-decade international critics' film poll since 1962. But according to the Hollywood Reporter, the 2012 survey of 846 movie experts lists Hitchcock's "Vertigo" as its new "greatest."

Also on the list: "Tokyo Story" (No. 3), "La Rgle du Jeu" (No. 4), "Sunrise: A Song for Two Humans" (No. 5), "2001: A Space Odyssey" (No. 6), "The Searchers" (No. 7), "Man with a Movie Camera" (No. 8), "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (No. 9), and "8 1/2" (No. 10).
