Ex-hacker: BPD site not in the clear - Boston Herald

Cyber attacks aimed at the Boston police could continue, a former member of the hacking collective Anonymous warned yesterday, after the shady organization claimed credit for knocking down the department's website.

Gregg Housh of Malden, who said he has been affiliated with Anonymous in the past, claimed the group infiltrated bpdnews.com early yesterday, spent time poking around, then defaced it with a statement about police brutality and the music video "Sound of da Police" by hip-hop artist KRS-ONE. That song compares police to plantation overseers in the pre-Civil War south. Anonymous stated on bpdnews.com they were the source of the hack.

"It was just more flak for what they did to Occupy Boston," Housh said. "They're going to continue going after Boston for what happened. It shouldn't have been removed in the first place."

Boston police broke up the Occupy Boston encampment in Dewey Square on Dec. 10 with little trouble.

Anonymous may have targeted Boston police before, hacking into the Patrolmen's Association website in October.

"They clearly ignored our warnings," the hackers stated on bpdnews.com yesterday. "So you get your kicks beating protesters? ... "That's OK; we get kicks defacing ... your websites — again."

Boston police said they are working with WordPress to restore the department's news and information site. Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said the site went down at about 9 a.m. and remained down until techs at WordPress managed to steer traffic to the police deparment's Facebook page in the afternoon.

Detectives are hunting for those responsible, Driscoll said.
