Houston, who was found dead in the bath of her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on the weekend, picked at a hamburger, chips and a turkey sandwich, and drank champagne and beer shortly before her death in the tub.

It is the lethal combination of alcohol and prescription drug Xanax, which was also found at the scene, that may have caused the 48-year-old's death.

A razor, a glass of water and clothing were strewn on the floor of the room where she was staying for an appearance at a pre-Grammy Awards party, as were bottles of prescription pills including Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug, the pain killer ibuprofen, Midol, which is used to treat menstrual cramps, and amoxicillin, according to website TMZ.

British newspaper The Sun reported Houston's doctors faced questions over whether she obtained the drugs illegally.

County coroners will request copies of the late singer's medical records and will compare them with prescription bottles found in the hotel room, a source said.

As details of Houston's last hours came to light, the Grammy winner made her final trip to New Jersey as her family flew her body home yesterday.

She will be laid to rest at the end of the week, with her family reportedly raising the possibility of a wake at Newark's Prudential Centre, a sporting arena that seats about 18,000.

Houston was born in Newark, where her love of singing was nurtured in the choir at a local church.

US President Barack Obama's thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, saying it was hard not to admire her "immense talent".

Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, placed flowers at a makeshift memorial to Houston outside the Beverly Hilton.

Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 18, was released from hospital after reportedly suffering a emotional breakdown following her mother's death.

Houston's former husband, singer Bobby Brown, who cancelled a concert and headed to LA to comfort his daughter, said his family was looking after her.

LA assistant coroner Ed Winter said the results of toxicology tests could take six to eight weeks.
