Boris Johnson has urged the Tory party to "whack gay marriage through" so the party can "knock it on the head" and get on with "the real Conservative things we want to do".
The Mayor of London was one of 19 senior Conservatives, including Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, who today launched a new group to campaign for gay marriage.
David Cameron is now on a collision course with a substantial minority within the Tory party, which remains vehemently opposed to affording gay people the choice of marrying in church.
