Up to 5.5 million households and businesses are to be hit by a near 11 per cent increase in energy prices from December.
Downing Street criticised the increase announced yesterday by EDF, the country's biggest electricity supplier, as very disappointing but repeated its pledge to use the force of law to ensure that consumers get the best possible tariffs.
Labour, however, said EDF's increase showed that the Prime Minister's promises had immediately unravelled.
The EDF increase costing the average householder an extra £122 a year is the largest energy price rise in recent weeks, trumping the 9 per cent announced
