Arrests made - FOXSports.com

SHEFFIELD, England

Three people were arrested as part of an investigation into the naming on Twitter of Welsh soccer player Ched Evans' rape victim, North Wales police announced Thursday.

The 19-year-old woman's name appeared in hundreds of abusive tweets that called for Evans to be freed, despite her being guaranteed lifetime anonymity under UK law.

Evans was sentenced to five years in jail Friday after being convicted of her rape in a hotel room near the Welsh resort town of Rhyl. The court found the victim was too drunk to consent to having sex with the 23-year-old.

North Wales police vowed to deal "robustly" with anyone committing a crime that would jeopardize her anonymity.

A statement from the police Thursday confirmed that two men were arrested under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Amendments Act and another male was arrested on suspicion of malicious communication.

All three men were held by South Yorkshire Police in Sheffield, northeastern England, where they were being interviewed by North Wales officers.

Evans' jailing cut short a promising professional career. The Sheffield United striker controversially was named in the League One Team of the Year for his standout performances, the result of a league-wide vote before his conviction.
