London, England (Sports Network) - QPR midfielder Joey Barton has been banned 12 matches and fined over $100,000 following his actions in the final match of the English Premier League season with Manchester City.
The 29-year-old Barton, who has a history of misconduct, elbowed Carlos Tevez, then was involved in altercations with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany as he left the pitch.
Barton received the suspension and fine after being found guilty of two counts of violent conduct as well as for the red card received for the elbow to Tevez in the second half of the match.
He admitted to one charge of violent conduct for kicking Aguero, but denied an additional charge of violent conduct against Kompany. The English FA announced the punishment Wednesday.
The initial red card earned a four-game suspension, three for the card and one for it being his second sending off of the season, and the ensuing incidents added eight more matches to the ban.
City scored twice in stoppage time to defeat QPR, 3-2, and win its first title in 44 years. QPR escaped relegation despite the loss.
