Stars sign up for Jesus Christ Superstar tour - RTE.ie

Darragh Maloney

10.25pm RT Two

If the Euro 2012 countdown is keeping you awake half the night, every night, then this show will only heighten the anticipation. Whether it's Terry Phelan smothering Ray Houghton as if he was a teddy who had been thrown from a burning building during that mad minute in Giants Stadium in 1994, or John Aldridge's display of the vernacular to the yellow baseball-capped Timmy Mallett lookalike in Orlando a few days later, or the conga of Elvises at the Andorra match in Barcelona in 2001, games involving Ireland have provided each of us with our own life-affirming, unforgettable moments. Oh, along the way there have been a few big events, performances and goals too, and these are where Darragh Maloney comes in. Over the next four weeks he'll chronicle Irish soccer history from the 19th century to the present day, with memories from heroes, hacks and historians alike. Episode one takes us from 1863 to 1929 and includes the garrison game going international, an acrimonious split and a landmark match. Poznan, June 10: you're closer than ever, but still seem so far away.
